The Museum Space: Description – Presentation
The Iakovos Kambanellis Theatre Museum, located in Naxos Town (Chora), reopened its doors to the public on 6 June for another season and will remain open until the end of October.
The museum has been operating in Kambanellis’ birthplace, the island of Naxos, since the summer of 2016. A collaboration between the Municipality of Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades and the South Aegean Region, the Museum is housed in a renovated historical stone building in the island's main town of Chora in the Grotta district, where Kambanellis was born and raised.

Personal items and rare exhibits
The playwrite's daughter, Katerina Kambanelli, has gifted to the Museum a wide range of personal effects and archival material: the writer's entire office, including part of his personal library, two academic robes worn during the award ceremonies for the Honorary Doctorate from the University of Cyprus (1996) and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1999); the Academy of Athens medal and the award from the President of the Hellenic Republic; other award medals and honorary plaques; playbills and performance programmes; set and costumes sketches; portraits of the writer; pencil drawings and small art objects created by the writer. miniature sculptures created by the author himself, portraits, and sketches.
Museum activities and events
Visitors can also watch digitized videos of broadcast interviews and films which Kambanellis directed or wrote. In addition, for research purposes, they may access all his published works and currently available translations.
Ακόμη, στον χώρο του Μουσείου, οργανώνονται θεατρικά και εικαστικά Εργαστήρια για παιδιά και ενήλικες, και γίνονται παρουσιάσεις ανοιχτές για το κοινό με τις εργασίες των εργαστηρίων.
Επίσης, γίνονται παρουσιάσεις θεατρικών αναλογίων, βιβλίων, διαλέξεις, συναυλίες και άλλες εκδηλώσεις.
The mission of the Iakovos Kambanellis Theatre Museum is to become a cultural and theatre centre which will showcase and promote the oeuvre of the great writer as well as work by other contemporary Greek playwrites in Greece and abroad.
Our aspirations are to creat a lively center, with many activities throughout the year, and for the Museum to become an influential theatre - arts center, serving schoolchildren, university theatre majors and drama - school students, as well as a major research center for the study of the all aspects of the Kambanellis oeuvre and modern Greek theatre.
The archive of Iakovos Kambanellis is currently being digitized and transferred to Naxos, thereby constantly expanding the Museum library's holdings.
In addition, the Museum hopes to lay the foundation of a major research project which will investigate the uninterrupted development of Greek theatre, from ancient ancient drama to contemporary theatre texts, as well as trace the entire historical course of the theatre as an art form in the country of its birth.
